  40. ExtraDOS Toolbox is a compilation of tools useful to Microsoft DOS
  41. users.  I originally wrote the first version of ExtraDOS under MS-DOS
  42. because I found a need for them and there were no commercially
  43. available products that provided these functions.  Some ExtraDOS tools
  44. were designed to enhance programs already found in MS-DOS.  Other
  45. tools were familiar to the Unix world, but were not available in
  46. MS-DOS.  Over the years this collection has grown into large group of
  47. very useful tools.  Some of these utilities are duplicates of those
  48. found elsewhere, but often provide much better features or reduced
  49. memory overhead than similar utilities found elsewhere.  In addition,
  50. ExtraDOS complements PC-Tools and Norton Utilities with added tools
  51. these programs do not provide.

  53. Over thirty of the ExtraDOS Toolbox utilities have been selected by
  54. Paul Somerson, former Executive Editor of PC Magazine, for Bantam
  55. Books', DOS Power Tools, 2nd Edition, Revised and Expanded for DOS

  70. international treaty provisions. Therefore, you must treat this software

  97.   Upon notification of defects in material or workmanship,
  98.   within the warranty period of 45 days from the date of purchase,
  99.   Foley Hi-Tech Systems will, at its option, replace the defective
  100.   diskette or refund the license fee. If you need to return a product,
  101.   call the Foley Hi-Tech Systems Technical Support Service Department
  102.   to obtain a return authorization number. The remedy for breach of
  103.   this warranty shall be limited to replacement or refund and shall
  104.   not encompass any other damages, including but not limited to loss
  105.   of profit, and special, incidental, consequential, or other similar
  106.   claims.

  138. DESCRIPTION
  139.  
  140.   SpeedRAM increases the speed of your system CPU by changing the
  141.   refresh rate of your systems 8253 timer chip. All Personal
  142.   Computers, including the original IBM PC were designed with a very
  143.   high refresh rate. The rate used by all personal computers is far
  144.   beyond the rate required by the RAM chips used in these machines.
  145.   SpeedRAM sets the refresh rate to match closer with RAM
  146.   manufacturers specifications and in turn frees up CPU cycles. These
  147.   free cycles can be used by your software rather than going to waste
  148.   by refreshing the RAM too often. The change in refresh rate matches
  149.   within specifications of most DRAM manufacturers. Depending on your
  150.   system SpeedRAM should increase your CPU's performance from 2% to
  151.   10%. You can measure this in many ways such as LANDMARK's CPU SPEED
  152.   Test or Norton Utilities SI program.

  164.   +       Enable SpeedRAM.  Entering a + will enable SpeedRAM and set
  165.           the optimum refresh rate.
  166.  
  167.   -       Disable SpeedRAM.  Entering a - will disable SpeedRAM and set
  168.           the refresh rate to stock values.
  169.  
  170.   r:nn    Set refresh rate to nn Us.  Entering r:nn will set the
  171.           refresh rate to nn micro seconds.  Only use this if you have
  172.           a good understanding of the refresh rates.  Setting too high
  173.           a refresh rate will cause memory  Parity errors or hang your
  174.           system. If you find that SPEEDRAM + causes parity errors or
  175.           hangs your system than you will want to try this option.

  182. WHAT IS A REFRESH RATE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
  183.  
  184.   The memory in your Personal Computer is called DRAM, or Dynamic
  185.   Random Access Memory. This memory is made of banks of 9 chips each
  186.   holding up to as much as 4MB of 1 bit data. Each chip in a bank
  187.   represents one of 9 bits. In Personal Computers, 8 of the bits store
  188.   data and the 9th bit is called a parity bit, used to determine if
  189.   the data bits are holding the proper information. DRAM chips can not
  190.   hold a charge of electricity for a very long time. In fact, a new
  191.   charge of 5 volts must be supplied about every 65 micro seconds or
  192.   it will loose its data. To supply this charge, that is refresh, the
  193.   memory, the CPU must stop processing data and direct the 8253 chip
  194.   to send the refresh charge to the bank of memory. Once the refresh
  195.   is done the CPU can continue processing. By reducing the number of
  196.   times the CPU has to stop to refresh the DRAM is how SpeedRAM speeds
  197.   up your system.

  203.   SpeedRAM is not a TSR. It does not require any RAM or take any away
  204.   from your system. SpeedRAM only needs to be loaded once and will
  205.   perform until the machine is rebooted.
  206.  
  207.   SpeedRAM has now loaded and changed your systems speed. Now try
  208.   loading some software to insure that the system is working properly.
  209.   Run all the programs that you normally run on your system. Do not
  210.   load any data that isn't already saved in case SpeedRAM causes a
  211.   problem. If SpeedRAM causes any problem, it will cause memory
  212.   problems, your system will either hang or you will get a Parity
  213.   Error type message, if have any problems refer to the Trouble
  214.   Shooting section that follows for further instructions. If
  215.   everything works fine then you might want to install SpeedRAM so it
  216.   loads every time you boot your machine.

  218.   If you have any time of Memory or RAM test you can further insure
  219.   that everything is working properly by running that test. If it
  220.   reports no problems than it is safe to assume that SpeedRAM has no
  221.   conflicts with your machine.

  230. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  231.  
  232.   SpeedRAM has been thoroughly tested on many systems before being
  233.   released but due to the complexity and variety of equipment
  234.   available we can not guarantee that it will work on every Personal
  235.   Computer.
  236.  
  237.   If you notice memory errors, parity errors, or that your machine is
  238.   hanging after running SpeedRAM + then the rate that SpeedRAM has
  239.   chosen for your system is causing the DRAM chips to fail. This is in
  240.   no way a permanent failure, you will just have to pick a lower rate
  241.   at which to run SpeedRAM. To use a manual refresh rate with SpeedRAM
  242.   enter the following:
  243.  
  244.     SPEEDRAM r:nn [ENTER]
  245.  
  246.   where nn is the refresh rate you wish to use. Start with 60 and
  247.   retest your system. If you continue to have problems keep decrements
  248.   the amount by 5 until you reach a value that your system works with.
  249.   If the value is less than 18 then you will most likely not benefit
  250.   from SpeedRAM. If this is the case contact technical support for
  251.   further help.

  253.   If you have to use a manual refresh rate then install with the rate
  254.   override option, and give it the value that worked with your system
  255.   when the installation program prompts you.

  257.   Some problems in benchmarking are caused by TSR or Memory Resident
  258.   software such as screen blankers or print spoolers.

  265.   The benchmark ATPERF.EXE from PC Tech Journal which measures
  266.   overhead is usually not affected by these programs. It is a very
  267.   good sign of the change SpeedRAM has with your program.
  268.  
  269.   Norton Utilities SI and Landmarks CPUSPEED can be affected by TSR's
  270.   and may not show the increase in performance. If notice no
  271.   improvement in performance try running the benchmarks without any
  272.   TSR's loaded. If you still see no increase, call technical support.

  274.   There are some utilities available as Shareware or Public Domain
  275.   software that perform a similar task to SpeedRAM. If you have any of
  276.   the following you might not see an increase with SpeedRAM:

  291.   pertaining to your particular problem before calling. This can often
  292.   save you time, as we take a collection of our most common questions

  296.   support, such as a multi-line 24-hour BBS system. We also monitor
  297.   most technical conferences in the BBS Interlink and RelayNet
  298.   networks as well as many conferences on the CompuServe

  325.   grown tools that I just could not stand to live without.  Many times
  326.   someone would see me using them and ask for a copy.  This was a big

  329.   written or asked me to just add this one little feature.  Six years
